Chuck Kurz is Arrow Athletics Resource Manager and Martial Arts Director. He is a retired US Army Special Forces (Green Beret) soldier and has trained in martial arts for twenty years. He started training as a Judoka in 2000 . He eventually received his USJA Black Belt (Shodan) from Sensei Bill Ryan of Clarksville, TN in 2008. Chuck has spent seven years as a head Judo instructor at various stops along the way in his military career. He began studying Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) under Allan Merullo, a Saulo Ribeiro black belt. He intensified his study of BJJ under Felipe Mota (Roger Gracie Academy) in Europe eventually earning his Purple Belt in 2014. Chuck loves training kids and has started or instructed multiple kids Judo or BJJ programs over the last 15 years. Chuck enjoys travel and always brings his gi with him. He has competed or trained in seven different countries. Chuck remains in demand as a training specialist both with the US Military and NATO and periodically consults in the United States and abroad. He holds a bachelors degree in Psychology. His entire family is involved in Judo, BJJ, and Gymnastics either as students or instructors.
Dennis Maness is Arrow Athletics Operations Manager. He is a retired law enforcement professional with over 30 years in the Chester County Sheriff’s Department. Dennis has extensive management and entrepreneurial experience as well having started and managed several construction businesses. His background in both public safety and construction management makes Dennis a unique fit to keep the athletes of Arrow safe both from a facilities and personnel perspective. Dennis’ family have been involved in Gymnastics at the competitive level for the past seven years.
Christy Nelson is the Arrow Athletics Gymnastics Program Director. She has been involved in competitive gymnastics from her childhood. As a competitor she attained the current equivalent of USAG Level 9/10 before she began to apply herself to coaching. She has coached athletes from the developmental stage through Level 10 over a career spanning more than two decades coaching. Her athletes have attained the State, Regional and National Championship levels. Christy is also a Gymnastics judge certified by the National Gymnastics Judges Association. She is certified to judge both men’s and women’s gymnastics events. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Business and Computer Programming. Christy’s family has been deeply involved in Gymnastics as she is the mom to an Elite athlete and as well as a coach.
Charlie Tamayo is the Arrow Athletics Gymnastics Head Coach. He has an extensive experience as an international competitor and coach. Charlie represented Cuba as a competitor in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. He won the Pan-American Games three times, the Gymnastics World Cup in 2002, and a Bronze Medal at the Gymnastics World Championships in 2001. Charlie has coached both men’s and women’s competitors at all levels up to Elite. He has an extensive college coaching career with nationally ranked NCAA gymnastics teams. Charlie is uniquely capable of mentoring those athletes at Arrow that are being recruited to college gymnastics teams. Having competed for such a long period of time, Charlie is very attuned to the challenges of high-level competitors and his infectious enthusiasm for the sport carries over into his athletes.
Melanie Kurz is the Arrow Athletics Office Manager. She has been working in support of Gymnastics and Martial Arts for over sixteen years. Her experience includes several stints as office staff, booster club officer, and martial arts club administrator. She has two years judging gymnastics in Europe. Melanie is an early childhood specialist having received her bachelors degree in early childhood education and having extensive experience in the field. She has managed childcare centers, taught kindergarten with the Department of Defense Dependent schools, conducted training and testing of childcare workers in home and institutional settings, and designed several church childcare programs. Her unique professional childcare background and gymnastics knowledge makes her a significant asset to the Arrow team. Melanie is the mother to four current or former gymnastics and judo competitors and the husband to one Judo coach.
